Storybooks Canada

Create stories

While Storybooks Canada is designed to be a carefully curated collection of 40 interlinked stories with text and audio rather than a content creation platform, it is possible for users to write their own stories through one of the open-licensed websites listed below. Once you are familiar with each of these, you can choose the one that is the most suitable for you.

ScribJab

ScribJab is a Canadian website where children can write, illustrate, audio record, and publish their own bilingual stories. More than 100 such stories are available on the website.

Storyweaver

Storyweaver offers thousands of stories in more than 100 languages. Although the project is based in India, it is open for all languages. Users can translate or write their own stories using images from other stories, or upload their own.

African Storybook

The African Storybook contains nearly 1000 stories in over one hundred languages, and invites users to translate and write stories in African languages, as well as English, French, Portuguese, Spanish, German, and Arabic. Users can translate or write their own stories using images from other stories, or upload their own.

Find illustrations

Imagebank Explorer allows you to search through thousands of illustrations from the African Storybook using keywords in any of 89 different languages. For example, try searching for images of elephants in English or cows in Swahili.

Many other sources of free, open-licensed, or public domain images can be found using the search tool on the Creative Commons website. For example, Pixabay offers more than a million images in the public domain (free and openly licenced).
